Sometimes it seems that conservation is an impossible, uphill battle without hope or end. To some extent that’s unfortunately always going to be a little bit true. That’s what makes every victory so important. As of yesterday, the West Indian Manatee has officially been taken off the Endangered Species List and downgraded to the Threatened Species List. In layman’s terms, they are no longer an endangered species.
Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke had this to say on the matter:
“The Fish and Wildlife Service has worked hand in hand with state and local governments, businesses, industry, and countless stakeholders over many years to protect and restore a mammal that is cherished by people around the world. Without this type of collaboration and the commitment of state and local partners, this downlisting would not have been possible.”
To celebrate here are some videos of manatees being cute:
We still have a long way to go but this is at least a step in the right direction.
