In our attempt to categorize and document the varieties of life on Earth we sometimes lose track of the emotional element. The BBC conducted a series of experiments to observe wild animals in their natural habitat, but they forgot that in observing a phenomenon, there’s a chance you will change its outcome. The experiment inserted a robotic spy money among a troop of Langur monkeys. The results were unexpected, to say the least.
This troop exhibited an all too human reaction to the death of a child. There’s something powerful and innocent in the way they took the robot into their community. There’s something heartbreaking in the way they bid it goodbye.
