Who among us didn’t grow up hearing the fable of the tortoise and the hare? This story is so ingrained in our popular culture that it’s become one of our society’s most recognizable metaphors. The steadfast tortoise has come to represent the put-upon everyman. The unwavering and determined worker who seeks accomplishment through prolonged effort and hard work. On the other side of the coin is the contemptible hare who relies only on natural talent, and takes success as a given. He’s a braggart, born with every advantage, and has zero work ethic.
The point of the story is that hard work and dedication will win out over natural talent and pride, in the long run. Whether this sentiment reflects reality or simply our cultural values is hard to say. Of course, being human we couldn’t leave well enough alone and so I present to you, a real-life and, all too literal, representation of the beloved fable.
Who would have ever guessed?
